I Madonnari Street Painting

I Madonnari Street Painting
May 26, 27 & 28 2007
Santa Barbara Mission

Madonnari002 Italian Street Painting Festival
On Memorial Day weekend the plaza of the Old Mission will be transformed with 200 colorful, large-scale street paintings created by 400 artists and young people. The artists (madonnari) begin working on Saturday morning of the Memorial Day weekend and continue drawing throughout the three-day festival or until their street paintings are completed. For 25,000 annual visitors, the festival also features live music on the Mission lawn and free evening concerts in the church, authentic Italian cuisine, and a special street painting area for children.

Santa Barbara's I Madonnari, the first street painting festival in North America, was started in 1987 by Executive Director Kathy Koury as a fundraiser for the Children's Creative Project. An innovative arts education program of the Santa Barbara County Education Office, the Children's Creative Project annually provides visual and performing arts workshops and performances presented by professional artists for tens of thousands of students in 150 schools.

Madonnari001 San Luis Obispo Festival
The Children's Creative Project and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Central Coast Chapter, both non-profit organizations, co-present the I Madonnari Festival. -Festival proceeds benefit Children's Creative Project arts education programs in the San Luis Obispo County schools. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Central Coast Chapter provides funds for an AIACCC Scholarship Foundation for San Luis Obispo County students. -For more information, visit aiacc.org

History
Street painting has a long tradition in cities in Western Europe and probably started in Italy in the 16th century. The artists who use chalk to draw on the street are known as "madonnari" or "Madonna painters" because they reproduced icons of the Madonna, (our lady). The works are traditionally called street paintings, rather than chalk drawings or sidewalk art, because when well executed they can resemble paintings. The artists would travel from town to town and create street paintings for traditional religious and folk festivals. These artists lived (and still live) from the coins thrown onto their work in appreciation for the image and the artist's skill.

Do You Like Fishing ?

Fishing off of the Santa Barbara Stearns Wharf is a pleasure, offering the opportunity to catch that Big One! Don't have a Rod & Reel on hand ? No worries, you can Rent By the Hour on the Wharf, at the very end of the Wharf.

One of the neat things about fishing on the Wharf is : You don't need a California Fishing Liscense, since it is a Working Wharf, and non-liscensed Fishing is allowed.

So Next time you're near the Beach area consider Fishing off of Stearns Wharf. Stop by the Bait Shop and Tell Frank the Owner: "SBLocal.com Says HELLO!"  And have fun by all means.

What to do in Santa Barbara

Some of the finer things in life are absolutely Free. The Museum of Art isn’t generally one of them, except for on Sundays ( Admission free every Sunday). But I’m not talking about the Museum…… I’m talking about just meandering along State Street on any given weekend, taking in the scenery and watching the many people visiting our lovely city. On any Given weekend there’s so much Artistry in the people just wandering the streets. Sure some times you have to be careful who you talk to, as in any city - Santa Barbara Has it’s share of strange ones. So next time your out strolling around, maybe you can comment on something/someone. Like the White Bearded Guy Playing The Bongos Insessantly - or the Goth-Dressed-Panhandling-Teenage-Rich-Children, or the Drunk Guy with the ____ in his ______ [go ahead, make something up to fill in the blanks, have fun with it!].

Where to Eat ?

Used to be lots of inexpensive places to eat in S.B. - but with the Rents constantly increasing here, well, it’s hard to keep the good places in town.

Now, if your hoping to find out about pricey eats . . . perhaps you should look elsewhere. Here we’ll point out a few fair priced eats, mostly of the Spanish/Mexican Tastes.

La Super Rica Taqueria - 622 N. Milpas St,  - Santa Barbara  - Phone: (805) 963-4940

As you may have heard before La Super Rica Taqueria has been a medium priced eatery, but since it bacame famous because Julia Childs qrote about it in the L.A. Times way back when: It’s pretty difficult to get a table during rush hours. But during the off hours, like after Lunch and Dinner you can usually get served fairly quickly.

If you like Mexican Food - with great hot sauces, and cold beer, or wine this is the place for you. One of the special things about LSRT is that you can watch them prepare the food, plus make the Tortillas BY HAND! The Mexican Sausage, Chorizo can be had in tacos or melted in a bowl of cheese! Muy Fantastico!

LITO’s Take Out - 514 E Haley St - Santa Barbara, CA 93103 - (805) 962-1559
If you have a Taste for Authentic Carnitas - Litos is tha place to be! Menudo on weekends, Enchiladas, Burritos and Homemade Beans and Rice! It’s a small Eatery and they tend to close early somedays.

Hopefully we can say more about these to LOCAL places to have Some Great Tasting Food. - Remember it’s an axxquired tases, all that salsa and meat; but one ce you know where to get it, you’ll always remember it!

Hope You Like Fish!

FishingHope You aren’t a vegetarian Who sez fishing off of Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara isn’t worth it ? Some Days it 15 Crabs, sometimes it’s 2, Sometimes it’s 50 mackerel, oily but Fry-able.

But what good is a day on the Wharf without grabbing a beveridge or shake at one of the local eateries, such as: Moby Dicks Restaurant or CharWest for a Burger.

Wander around, Rent a Pole or Net and take in the average Day on the Wharf. On Days’ Off - try and do that! Especially as a Local.

Although, catching and eating seafood isn’t something that alot os Santa Barbarans do at any given time. What did you catch, tghe last time that you were there ? Keeping It Local. - SBLocal.com

General Sightseeing Information

Here's some Good info for the general Visitor & Tourist to the Santa Barbara area ? Well, we've got some interesting Pointers for you right here at SBLocal.com . . .. . . One of the main things you may notice while here, is that everything seems to be a bit off-kilter: that's because the ocean/beaches of Santa Barbara facr mostly to the South, and knowing that California has it's ocean to the West well, don't become too disoriented by it.

Photodisk_block_2

All you really need to remember are a few main streets: STATE Street goes North & South, the mountainside is referred to as the EAST-side and the side towards the ocean as the WEST-side.

As the city turns, these directions change even when you're not looking! SEE the map below for more orientation. (You can click the MAP for a larger Printable Version!).

For a first time visitor, a highly reccommended area to visit is the Beach area! But of course - who wouldn't want to spend the day at the Beach ? While you're visiting the Beach area , don't forget to take a stroll on Stearns Wharf - A working Wharf where you can get Fresh Boiled Crabs, in fact Rachel Ray featured the small restaurant at the end of the Wharf! Grab a couple of fishing poles or crab nets from Stearns Wharf Bait Shop at the very end and perhaps land yourself a Big One! -Don't forget to grab a copy of the Santa Barbara Local Sights DVD Video and take home some Memorable Photographs on the DVD. Taste some wine, if you'd like on the Wharf also. Be sure to bring your camera with you so you can snap a photo during Sunset with the Harbor in the background, which brings us to:
Obviously, we cannot speak of everything to see while in Santa Barbara. If we could, the information would take up at least a couple of hundred pages of information - plus perhaps a hundred photos or more!So to wind this small page down: Don't forget to see the amazing view from the County Courthouses' Tower. Check out the Museum of Art at the corner of Anapamu and State Streets. The Flag Walk is located near the Harbor along the Breakwater. There's also the Ty Warner Sea Center, great for the kids. The Rainbow Arch Sculpture is away from Stearns Wharf & Chase Palm Park, The Visitors Center is also next to the Park on the corner of Santa Barbara and Cabrillo Blvd. - They have tons of information available. If you get a chance, and are bringing the kids with you, don't forget to give them a ride on the Replica of an Old Time Carousel on Cabrillo Blvd. located in Chase Palm Park. Bring A Camera Too!! Also don't forget to check out some of the Older Historical Locations - Casa De la Guerra, next to City Hall and De la Guerra Plaza. You'll find the Street in Spain walkway that'll take you to some really neat places and a nice Restaurant down that Alley-way, it's right next to Casa De la Guerra.
